Jamaica tid bits

When I book a trip for you, we will sit down and go over where you are vising, how to get around, and important things to know when traveling. Here are a few helpful things to know when visiting Jamaica:

  1. Visa Requirements: There are no visa requirements for travel up to 90 days. There is an entry form you need to fill out, and I will walk you through that.

  2. Language: English is the official language, but Jamaican Patois is widely spoken. English is used in official and tourist contexts.

  3. Currency: Jamaica uses the Jamaican Dollar (JMD). However, U.S. dollars are widely accepted.

  4. Cultural Etiquette: Jamaicans are generally friendly and warm. Greeting with a friendly "Hello" and using polite phrases like "Please" and "Thank you" is customary.

  5. Safety: I have never felt unsafe in Jamaica, however, I would not suggest venturing into towns and off the resort without a guide.

  6. Transportation: Public transportation options include taxis, buses, and route taxis. Negotiate fares with taxis before the trip.

  7. Tipping: Tipping is customary in restaurants and for services. A 10% to 15% tip is common for good service. Unless you stay at Sandals. All tips are included in your stay.

  8. Food: Jamaican cuisine is flavorful and diverse, with dishes like jerk chicken, patties, and fresh seafood. Don't miss the opportunity to try local food.

  9. Water: In tourist destinations, tap water is generally safe. It's advisable to drink bottled water or purified water in rural areas.

  10. Reggae and Music: Jamaica is the birthplace of reggae music. Enjoy live music, and explore the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston to learn about this iconic genre.

  11. Beaches and Watersports: Jamaica offers beautiful beaches and numerous watersports opportunities. It has some amazing diving opportunities! Your resort will give you guidelines on staying safe.

  12. Cultural Events: Research local events and festivals happening during your visit. Jamaica hosts various cultural celebrations throughout the year.

  13. Electricity: Jamaica uses 110V electrical outlets.

  14. Sun Protection: Protect yourself from the strong Caribbean sun by wearing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.

By keeping these points in mind, you can fully enjoy Jamaica's natural beauty, lively culture, and warm hospitality while respecting local customs and traditions.
