Scotland tid bits

When I book a trip for you, we will sit down and go over where you are vising, how to get around, how to handle the language barrier, and important things to know when traveling. Here are a few helpful things to know when visiting Scotland:

  1. Language: English is the official language in Scotland, but Scottish Gaelic is also spoken in some areas. Most people speak English, and learning a few common Scottish words and phrases can be a fun addition to your trip.

  2. Currency: Scotland uses the British Pound Sterling (GBP). Credit cards are widely accepted, but it's advisable to carry some cash for smaller establishments and transportation.

  3. Weather: Scotland's weather can be unpredictable, so pack layers and waterproof clothing, regardless of the season. Be prepared for rain at any time.

  4. Cultural Etiquette: Scots are known for their friendliness. Saying "please" and "thank you" is customary, and it's polite to greet with a friendly "Hello."

  5. Tipping: Tipping is customary in restaurants, and leaving a 10% to 15% tip for good service is typical.

  6. Outdoor Adventures: Scotland offers stunning natural landscapes, including the Highlands and islands. Be prepared for outdoor activities like hiking, golfing, and fishing, depending on the region and season.

  7. Historical Sites: Explore historic castles, ancient ruins, and museums to uncover Scotland's rich history and heritage.

  8. Whisky Tasting: Scotland is famous for its Scotch whisky. Consider visiting a distillery for a tasting session and a deeper understanding of this national treasure.

  9. Public Transportation: Scotland has a well-developed public transportation system, including buses and trains. Consider purchasing an Explorer Pass for discounts on travel.

  10. Emergency Services: The emergency number for police, fire, and medical assistance in Scotland is 999.

  11. Safety: Scotland is generally safe for tourists, but standard safety precautions should still be observed, especially in remote or rural areas.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can fully enjoy Scotland's breathtaking landscapes, vibrant cities, and rich cultural heritage while respecting local customs and traditions.
